MBA applicants who've received disappointing GMAT or GRE scores, low score isn't a deal-breaker

The first thing to do is to understand that bad business school test scores are not the end of the world. People get into top business schools with terrible scores all the time.

There's everything else about you: your achievements, your character, your personality. All of that will play a really meaningful role in your candidacy. But even in the context of just your baseline statistics, you'll still see that the test score really only plays a small role.

Here is a roadmap for improvement.

Key Points:

  1. Keep it in Perspective:  A single test score doesn't define your candidacy. Work with your coach/advisor to see how your score fits within your overall profile, considering your experience, achievements, and personality. Remember, many successful MBA students have overcome similar hurdles.

  2. De-stress and Reconnect: Before hitting the books again, take a break to relax and clear your head. This helps you avoid burnout and maintain a healthy perspective.

  3. Practice with Purpose: The most effective study method involves using official practice materials from the test makers (GMAT or GRE guides). Simulate test conditions with timed practice sessions (10-20 questions at a time) and focus on thorough review. Spend twice as much time analyzing your mistakes as you did solving the problems. This helps you understand the underlying concepts and improve your problem-solving skills.

  4. Consider Tutoring:  While self-study or general test prep classes work for some, others may benefit from personalized tutoring. A good tutor can pinpoint your weaknesses and create a customized study plan. If your low score is the main obstacle to your target schools, tutoring can be a valuable investment.

In short: A low GMAT/GRE score doesn't mean your MBA dreams are over. By keeping things in perspective, practicing effectively, and seeking personalized help if needed, you can improve your score and boost your admission chances. Don't lose hope!
